World Day of Migrants & Refugees
Emtithal (Emi) Mahmoud, World Champion Poet and Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency shares her deeply personal poem Sudan Balady, written to highlight the ongoing conflict in Sudan where over 5.2 million people have been displaced and how innocent civilians have been affected, including her loved ones.
Since 1914 the Catholic Church has been celebrating World Day of Migrants and Refugees on the last Sunday in September as a way to express concern for and solidarity with the many vulnerable people on the move, to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. In his message, Pope Francis reminds us that the decision to move is not always voluntary. He urges us to help build peace and stability in places where people are being forced to move.
