
Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The world’s first atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima (August 6th) and Nagasaki (August 9th). An estimated 200,000 people were killed instantly. Many others died later from injuries and radiation sickness.
The 80th anniversary comes amid renewed concern about nuclear weapons, There are at least 12,500 nuclear weapons on the planet possessed by nine countries, estimated to be warheads the equivalent of 145,000 Hiroshima bombs.
